The Cross Bar Ranch Transmission Main is 60 inches in diameter and carries raw groundwater from Crossbar Ranch Wellfield southeast toward the Cypress Creek Water Treatment Plant, where the water is treated and delivered to the regional system. This pipeline runs under State Road 52 (SR 52).
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is expanding SR 52, which includes installing a gravity stormwater system on both sides of the road that will conflict with Tampa Bay Water’s existing Cross Bar Ranch Transmission Main and valves.
To ensure water delivery and avoid this conflict, Tampa Bay Water will install a new section of 60-inch pipe underneath SR 52 at a different elevation. FDOT will remove the abandoned section of the transmission main during the roadway widening project.
Relocating this section of the transmission main will allow Tampa Bay Water to continue to reliably deliver regional water to its member governments while allowing for proper drainage for the expanded roadway.
The budget for this project is $3.5 million for design and construction. FDOT will reimburse Tampa Bay Water up to 62% of the pipe relocation construction costs.
Construction will begin in early 2026 and is scheduled to be completed in fall 2027.
Traffic on SR-52 will not be affected during the pipeline relocation, as the new section of transmission main will be installed via microtunnel. Construction noise and dust should not affect area residents as this work is in a rural, undeveloped area of SR-52.
